Since 2013, I have intensively studied the supply of clothing to Australia’s convicts. During presentations of my research, people have often asked for instructions on how to make the clothes I have displayed. This manual has been developed to fit that need.

Over the transportation period there were many changes to dress styles for fashionable women. However, the basic outfits for common everyday wear, and for convicts, remained the same. The options for how to make these clothes depended on sewing skills and availability of fabrics. This manual provides one or two simple styles per item. The patterns allow the user to make their own size in the fabric of their choosing.

The complete outfit includes: a shift (underwear); a petticoat (skirt); a jacket - options for this include a closed front top, or a front fold over jacket with or without a collar; 2 adjustable caps; a pair of stockings in various sizes; a neck and pocket handkerchiefs; and an apron; with added instructions for making fabric buttons. Sizes are adjustable as per the instructions.
